What is S.O.A.P.?

S.O.A.P. (Scripture, Observation, Application, Prayer) is a church-wide spiritual formation resource intended to help us connect with the Lord and grow daily through the prayerful reading and application of His Word.

Every day, you’ll receive a passage of Scripture in your email inbox that corresponds with the upcoming Sunday message, which will eventually take you entirely through the “Big Story” of Scripture. From there, grab your journal or digital tool of choice and jump right in!

  • Scripture: Take time to slow down and prayerfully READ the passage each day, allowing the Holy Spirit to grab hold of your attention. Write the passage reference at the top of your journal for that day.
  • Observation: Pay attention and observe all the details, people, places, and truths that are going on in the passage. Write out at least 10 observations, no matter how basic they seem. (Think “Captain Obvious” and write out summaries of what’s going on.) A good question to ask is “What’s the original message intended for the original audience?”
  • Application: Keep praying and listening to the Holy Spirit as He specifically applies that passage to your life today. He may give instruction, encouragement, reminders of promises, or corrections for a particular area of your life. What’s the ONE THING  He is highlighting for you to change or think differently about as a result of this passage?
  • Prayer: Write out a prayer. This can be as simple as asking God to help you use this passage in your life. Or it may be a request that He provide greater insight into what He has been revealing to you. Remember, prayer is a two way conversation, so be sure to listen to what God has to say!

Each Wednesday, the passage we post will be the one that will be preached on the coming Sunday. Ask yourself this question: “If I were preaching this passage to Dallas Bible Church, how would I preach and apply its message?”

Our hope is that this will be a resource that allows you to flourish in your relationship with the Lord – both personally and corporately – as we journey together this upcoming year.
